The Point Depot
Posted: 27th Feb 2004 |
The Point was built in 1878 as a train depot to service Dublin's docks. The decline in shipping to the North Wall Quay saw the depot close in the mid 1950's. It remained dormant until 1987 when it was purchased by local businessman Harry Crosbie. With Harry's vision of a world class venue, the process of transforming the disused building into an internationally renowned venue began. In 1989 the Apollo Leisure Group (now owned by Clear Channel Entertainment) was invited on board as equal shareholders. Clear Channel Entertainment manage and operate venues in the U.K, Europe and U.S.A. With their vast operational knowledge and experience of the entertainment industry, this ensured a significant advance in the development of The Point as Ireland's Premier Location. Clear Channel Entertainment are responsible for the day to day management of The Point. In 1989 a fly tower was added to facilitate the staging of large scale theatrical productions and in 1991 the last of the major construction work was completed with the addition of the balconies. Since The Point opened its doors in 1988 in excess of 2 million people have enjoyed a list of artists and events that reads like a 'Who's Who?' of the entertainment industry. |
